How Ohio electricity choice works
Ohio lets customers choose their electricity supplier while the utility keeps delivering power. Here are the roles.
Supply (generation)
The electricity itself. You can buy this from a competing supplier or stay on your utility's default supply.
Delivery
Your utility delivers electricity over its poles and wires, maintains the grid, and restores outages. This doesn't change with your supplier.
Billing
In most cases you still get one bill from your utility, with supply and delivery shown separately.
Price to Compare
Your utility's published default supply rate. Use it to compare competing supplier offers.
Aggregation
Many Ohio communities group residents to negotiate a supplier rate. You may be enrolled automatically — check your bill.

Find the key information
Your bill holds the answers to most eligibility questions. Here's what to look for.
- Account number — needed to enroll or switch suppliers.
- Current supplier — shown near the supply charges; may be your utility or a competing supplier.
- Supply rate — your price per kWh for generation.
- Price to Compare — often printed separately as the benchmark for shopping.
- kWh used — your consumption for the billing period.
- Delivery charges — separate from supply; unaffected by your supplier choice.
